“TRLs – Technology Readiness Levels (and MRL – Manufacturing Readiness Levels) are a set of management metrics that enable the assessment of the maturity of a particular technology and the consistent comparison of maturity between different types of technology—all in the context of a specific system, application and operational environment.” – TRL Handbook for space applications.
The Technology Demonstrators’ guidelines (DMTs) serve as a comprehensive framework for developers aiming to create technology demonstrators that effectively validate the achieved Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs). By categorizing demonstrators into seven distinct levels (DMT 1 to 7), the DMT provides clear pathways for developers to produce demonstrators that not only showcase the maturity of their technologies but also articulate the underlying concepts and functionalities being developed. This clarity is crucial for attracting the attention of potential stakeholders, as it facilitates informed discussions and negotiations regarding technology transfer and commercialization. By explicitly outlining the expectations and deliverables associated with each TRL, the DMT enhances communication between researchers and industry partners, ultimately fostering collaboration and investment opportunities that can accelerate the transition of innovative technologies from the lab to the market.
